The Principles of Ayurvedic Detox

What are the great principles of Ayurvedic detox?

According to Ayurveda, every day we assimilate and we eliminate. Eliminating, detoxifying, is the natural functioning of our system: we eat to turn food into energy, and the resulting waste then has to be eliminated. This happens constantly, but there are periods when the body devotes itself to it more intensely.

In autumn and spring, the body eliminates a little more. Traditionally, people were more influenced by the seasons: during winter, we accumulate a bit more in the way of toxins, we eat more to produce warmth, and some waste builds up. In spring, the body seeks to free itself of it; light stimulates the metabolism a little more, and the body naturally clears away what built up over winter, instinctively seeking out the food nature makes available at that time. In spring, for instance, many bitter herbs activate bile, help eliminate toxins, and stimulate digestion. Nature does this for animals; traditional cuisines, before industrialization, took this into account too, because our instincts once worked the way animals' still do.

For a more intensive detox, one option is Panchakarma, an elaborate and powerful process that combines massage, herbs, and diet. Well conducted, in a genuine Ayurvedic center faithful to this tradition, it can reverse an illness, help healing, rebalance the three doshas, or simply prevent trouble. But we should not underestimate the importance of healthy daily habits, which keep us well day to day, long before things ever reach that point.

Between the two, there are also small detoxes within everyone's reach. Ayurveda offers many measures to strengthen the detox function of both body and mind. One of them, particularly necessary today, is detoxifying from the excessive use of screens and social media, to protect a healthy brain metabolism. On the food side, drinking a glass of hot water in the morning, and during detox periods (autumn, spring), preparing one to two liters of hot water to drink throughout the day, between meals: a simple and powerful gesture that helps the body eliminate toxins. Ayurveda also sometimes recommends a mono-diet: eating nothing but kitchari for a weekend, a very simple dish of legumes, rice and vegetables, which rebalances digestion. From a demanding Panchakarma to a simple glass of hot water, it is always the same principle at work: helping the body do what it already knows how to do, without burdening it further.
